Quinten Vermeulen (2002) lives and works in Brussels. His work revolves around everyday gestures, analog processes, and the material conditions of image production. Variations in scale, color and rhythm reveal the act of printing as a practice in its own right. The image then becomes an unimpeded matter always liable to be replayed, extracted, or reformulated. Through photography and installation, he interrogates these mediums from within, making the darkroom, the archive, and the exhibition-dispositif integral components of the work. By embracing these processes, he enquires on how images are made and how we look at them.

The exhibition presents variations of double takes – such as looking and looking again, progressing and looking back, or zooming in and out. By incorporating traces of their production processes, Vermeulen’s works draw attention to the constructed nature of images. Double Take proposes to look twice in order to recognize entry points to broader reflections on both perception and the photographic medium in everyday motifs, situations and objects.

Quinten Vermeulen graduated with a Master’s degree in Visual Art at the LUCA School of Arts in Brussels. His work has been presented in Botanique (BE), Contretype (BE), Fondation A (BE), Vleeshal (NL), Hippolyte Gallery (FI), Verksmiðjan (IS), CC Hasselt (BE).
