The slash is a mark that cannot make up its mind. It cleaves through skin and bone to divide binaries, while bridging unexpected gaps in one single gesture. It severs and sutures in the same breath, holding seeming opposites in “an uneasy, impossible simultaneity” (Lauren Elkin). In SLASH/STROKE, Natasja Mabesoone, Mercedes Azpilicueta and Anna-Maria Pinaka inhabit this restless space: where the clichés of girlhood slash patriarchal expectations, the monsters we think we know show their sharp tongues, and stern leather softly flows into a stroke of intimate critique. The three artists navigate ambiguity as a form of protection in their explicit narratives of resistance. What if occupying the grey zone isn’t a compromise, but a feminist strategy?
